The question seemed straightforward enough. After all, Mpho Mvelase has spent nearly two decades navigating the highs and lows of South African football. At 37, with more than 300 senior appearances to his name and entering his sixth season at TS Galaxy, the veteran defender has become one of the Betway Premiership’s enduring figures.
So, when journalists asked him what had kept him going for so long, many expected the usual response about discipline, recovery and nutrition. Instead, he had something far more powerful and unexpected to say.
Mvelase, one of TS Galaxy’s most experienced alongside Mlungisi Mbunjana, became visibly emotional before breaking down in tears as he reflected on the sacrifices, faith and life decisions that have shaped his career.
The veteran admitted that longevity in football is not simply about what happens on the training ground, but the choices made away from it.
MPHO MVELASE: ‘THAT’S WHY I GOT MARRIED EARLY’
“I was also guided. I played with players like Benni [McCarthy] at Orlando Pirates. And I also played with Siya Sangweni, Lucky Lekgwathi, Happy Jele and Oupa Manyisa,” Mvelase said. “The people around me could tell me what was going on. They advised me on finances. They guided me, and I grew as a player more quickly.”
The defender explained that watching how one of South Africa’s most successful footballers, McCarthy, carried himself taught him valuable lessons at a young age.
“I realised that you can’t chase a flashy lifestyle at the expense of the very career that puts food on the table. That’s why I got married at an early age, and it’s been working for me.
“I wish my colleagues could see the example. I’m 37 years old and still playing. If I want, I can still play three more years.”
When FARPost followed up on exactly what marrying at a young age did for him, emotions got the better of him. With cameras rolling, the Soweto-born defender paused before revealing the role his faith and family have played in helping him defy time.
“It was a very hard decision I made in life. I’m a believer in God. When I talk about these things, I become a bit emotional,” he said. “Where God has put me now, it’s by His grace. God gave me the direction to get married, and it’s really been a very good thing for me. That’s why even now, I’m still playing injury-free. I’m thankful for that.”

Mvelase’s journey has been anything but straightforward. The experienced centre-back came through the ranks at Orlando Pirates, sharing dressing rooms with some of the club’s modern greats, including McCarthy, Lekgwathi, Sangweni, Happy Jele and Oupa Manyisa.
Like many young footballers, he has previously admitted there were moments when the distractions that come with the game threatened to derail his progress.
“I was young when I was at Pirates, maybe I was 22 years old. You know, football players at that age, sometimes you forget about football and concentrate on the wrong things,” he has said previously.
Those lessons would ultimately shape a career that has seen him represent several clubs across the country, including Polokwane City, Chippa United, Marumo Gallants and now TS Galaxy.
DEFYING THE ODDS AFTER CAREER-THREATENING INJURY
Perhaps the most remarkable chapter of Mvelase’s story came during his stint at Gallants. He suffered a serious injury that left medical experts questioning whether he would ever return to professional football. “The doctors told me I would never play again. I was out for 10 months. But trusting in God, everything has turned around,” he recalled in a previous interview.
Mvelase has enjoyed something of a renaissance at The Rockets. At an age when many footballers are contemplating life after retirement, the veteran insists he is still performing at the highest level.
For the dreadlocked defender, the secret to longevity was never hidden in a gym programme or a recovery session. It was found in the guidance of senior teammates, the stability of family life, and an unwavering faith that carried him through moments when others believed his career was over.
“I’m one of the senior players at TS Galaxy, I’m the first one to talk to these young players to an extent that they get bored… There’s no player who’s bigger than the game,” Mvelase said. And judging by his own admission, South African football may not have seen the last of him just yet.
