Former Magesi FC defender John Mokone has resurfaced at Durban City FC as he searches for a fresh start in his career ahead of the 2026/27 season, FARPost has learnt.
Mokone is a free agent after parting ways with the Limpopo-based side following their relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Magesi fell short in the PSL Promotional/Relegation Play-offs alongside Cape Town City FC, as Milford FC secured promotion to the Betway Premiership.
The left wing-back has begun training with Durban City FC under the watchful eye of new head coach Khalil Ben Youssef, who recently took over the coaching job.
Durban City has been one of the busiest teams in the current transfer window, signing new players to build a competitive squad that can challenge for titles in the upcoming season. The KZN-based outfit has already signed notable names such as Gaston Sirino, Tashreeq Morris, Seth Green, and Bandile Shandu, amongst others.
With the 2026/27 season kicking off in August, Durban City have welcomed John Mokone to their training grounds as he looks to impress Ben Youssef and his technical team to earn a contract.

The 27-year-old Mokone had established himself as one of the key players for Magesi after making 63 appearances across all competitions for the club, scoring three goals and providing six assists.
Having missed out on securing Mamelodi Sundowns defender Terrence Mashego on loan, FARPost understands Mokone has been earmarked by Durban City as a target to strengthen the left-back position.
This publication has established that Mokone is close to sealing a deal with Durban City after impressing the technical staff during his trial so far.
Meanwhile, Durban City will be aiming to solidify their place in the Premiership after gaining promotion from the second tier last season. In an impressive debut top-flight campaign, they lifted the Nedbank Cup and finished eighth on the log with 39 points from 30 games.
