South African tacticians Manqoba Mngqithi and Steve Barker are officially set for their first taste of Tanzania’s fiercest rivalry following the confirmation of the Kariakoo Derby dates, beginning with next month’s Community Shield showdown between Simba SC and Yanga SC.
For the first time in the history of Tanzanian football, two coaches from South Africa have been appointed to take charge of the country’s two biggest clubs, Simba SC and Young Africans SC.
This comes after Young Africans SC recently appointed Manqoba Mngqithi as their new head coach. The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows coach is the first South African to take charge of the reigning Tanzanian champions.
On the other hand, Simba SC have shown confidence in former Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker, who is set to continue as coach for a second season.
MANQOBA MNGQITHI AND STEVE BARKER SET TO CLASH IN HISTORIC KARIAKOO DERBY
Following the confirmation of the Tanzanian NBC Premier League fixtures this week, Mngqithi and Barker are set to meet at least three times this season. Their first Kariakoo Derby clash will be in the highly anticipated Community Shield on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, marking the kickoff of the 2026/27 domestic season in the East African country.
The two clubs will meet in their first League fixture of the season on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The decision to move the biggest fixture in Tanzanian football to Uhuru Stadium is due to ongoing renovations at several venues across the country, including the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON], which Tanzania will co-host alongside Kenya and Uganda.
KELETSO MAKGALWA SET TO GET A TASTE OF THE BIGGEST FIXTURE IN TANZANIAN FOOTBALL
The third Kariakoo Derby of the season, which will be the second in the League, will take place on Saturday, 6 February 2027, also at the Uhuru Stadium.
It will also be a first derby experience for former Sekhukhune United winger Keletso Makgalwa, who recently completed a move to Simba SC. He is set to reunite with his former Mamelodi Sundowns teammates Rushine De Reuck and Neo Maema, though the latter’s situation remains uncertain after his loan spell from the Brazilians ended at the conclusion of last season.
