Newly promoted Betway Premiership side Kruger United are preparing for the biggest night in their history, and head coach Abram Mongoya wouldn’t have scripted their top-flight arrival any other way.
The 2025/26 Motsepe Foundation Championship winners mark their official top-flight debut on Saturday, 1 August 2026, when they host Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs under the lights at Mbombela Stadium [20:00].
Mongoya, who guided the ‘Village Boys’ to automatic promotion from the second tier, has been retained at the helm for their maiden season in the elite league.
Speaking at the Betway Premiership season launch at The Venue at the Houghton Hotel on Wednesday, the tactician admitted that, if given the power to draw their opening fixture, he would have chosen Amakhosi.

For Mongoya, welcoming the Soweto heavyweights to Mbombela serves a dual purpose: fulfilling a provincial demand for top-flight football while catching Amakhosi’s new technical team under head coach Fernando Da Cruz during a transitional phase.
“A big yes [I would have chosen to play Chiefs first up] because it has a lot of advantages when we looked at it,” Mongoya explained. “It’s an exciting fixture for the supporters; they’ve been longing for something like this. I think they’ve only had TS Galaxy in our province [Mpumalanga] to bring in [top-flight] football. But it is also a good opportunity for the boys to showcase their talent. I think it is a good platform.
“Getting a Chiefs side at a time where the coaches have not yet settled is a sort of perfect situation. Hopefully it goes our way.”
Despite the optimism surrounding Chiefs’ tactical realignment under Da Cruz, Kruger United’s technical bench has done its homework ahead of the Saturday night showdown. Mongoya revealed his side carefully analysed Amakhosi’s final pre-season matches to dissect their structural patterns and fluid line-up alterations.
“We are going to try and impose our game as much as we can against Chiefs and test ourselves in the big league now,” he stated. “We studied their past three games, and we’ve seen how they structure and restructure the team to try and change shapes. You don’t know how they are going to start or who they are going to play.”

While facing Chiefs with an unsettled tactical team presents an opportunity, Mongoya remains grounded regarding the psychology of opening-day fixtures against top sides.
He warned that the appointment of Da Cruz triggers a squad-wide hunger at Naturena, making every Amakhosi player dangerous.
“The biggest challenge is that all the players also want to please the new coach,” Mongoya noted. “There’s a new coach effect. Everybody wants to be a starter. Any player who was not given an opportunity last season by any previous coach wants to make sure they are starters now, so they are going to do more.
“That’s why I’m saying it’s also a big challenge. It’s not going to be an easy game—and there won’t be any easy games for Kruger United in the Premiership.”
