Former Banyana Banyana striker Ode Fulutudilu has shared her thoughts on what Desiree Ellis’ charges must do to rescue their CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations [WAFCON] campaign ahead of their final two Group B fixtures.
The former African champions started the WAFCON tournament in Morocco on the wrong foot, suffering a 2-1 defeat to neighbours Tanzania on Monday night at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca.
The defeat leaves Banyana sitting third in Group B without a point, placing pressure on their upcoming clashes against Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso.

Reflecting on what needs an urgent fix, Fulutudilu stressed that the South African women’s national team must rediscover the grit and sharpness that saw them lift the continental crown in 2022.
“The team needs a much stronger mentality, better decision-making in the final third, and more defensive discipline. They will also need to move the ball quicker, be more clinical with their chances, and show the fighting spirit that helped them win WAFCON in 2022,” Fulutudilu told FARPost.
With the big encounter against Ivory Coast looming on Friday night, the former forward issued a stark warning regarding the quality of the West Africans.
“Ivory Coast will be a much tougher opponent, so Banyana must perform at a much higher level,” she added. “I played with some of those players that play for Ivory Coast, and let me tell you now that Banyana are in big trouble if they don’t execute at the highest level collectively on Friday.”
WHAT WENT WRONG FOR BANYANA BANYANA AGAINST TANZANIA
Analysing the disappointing opening match against Tanzania, Fulutudilu pointed to complacency and a lack of tactical execution as the main factors for the loss.
“I think Banyana underestimated the challenge and didn’t play with enough intensity, especially in key moments. They struggled to create clear scoring chances and looked vulnerable defensively,” Fulutudilu explained.
“To add to that, they didn’t take control of the match the way they were expected to. At this level, every team is improving, so you can’t rely on reputation alone.”

South Africa have no room for error as they look to turn things around tonight against Ivory Coast. The kick-off is scheduled for 19:00 [South African time] at the Stade Moulay Rachid in Casablanca, where maximum points will be non-negotiable if Banyana hope to advance to the knockout stages.
