Former Banyana Banyana forward Ode Fulutudilu has explained why recalling experienced midfielder Robyn Moodaly-Salgado back to the national team squad was the right call by head coach Desiree Ellis.
The 32-year-old had stepped away from international football on 12 October 2023, citing mental health issues as the main reason.
Moodaly-Salgado was part of the Banyana squad that etched their names in the history books by winning their maiden CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations [WAFCON] title in 2022 following a 2-1 victory over hosts Morocco.

“Today is a difficult day for me, but it is also a day of reflection and gratitude. It is with a heavy heart that I would like to inform you all that I will be stepping away from the South African National Women’s Team Banyana Banyana,” reads Moodaly-Salgado’s statement at the time.
“My decision is a personal choice and is rooted in my commitment to taking care of my mental well-being. I will continue to play football at a club level, with my love and passion for the game remaining unchanged.
“I’m committed to continuously improving and growing within my career for as long as possible and welcoming new opportunities that may lie ahead.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my coaches and teammates who have been a part of my journey. You have all had a profound impact on my career, and I am forever grateful for the support and guidance you have provided.”
The midfielder has since returned to the national team setup after almost three years away from the Banyana squad.
Moodaly-Salgado is part of the South African women’s national team currently competing at the 2026 WAFCON tournament in Morocco.

Speaking to FARPost in an exclusive interview, Fulutudilu endorsed the decision to bring back the midfielder, highlighting what she brings to the set-up both on and off the pitch.
“Yes [it was the right decision to call her back], provided it was entirely her decision and she felt mentally and physically ready to return. Robyn brings valuable experience, leadership, and quality to the squad,” Fulutudilu told FARPost.
“Mental health should always come first, but if she has recovered, wants to represent South Africa again, and has earned her place on merit, then bringing her back is a positive move for both the player and the team.”
Meanwhile, Banyana will play their final Group B match against Burkina Faso on Tuesday, 4 August, at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.
Ellis’ team started the tournament on the wrong foot with a 2–1 loss to Tanzania, followed by a 2–2 draw against Côte d’Ivoire last week.
