Former Orlando Pirates defender Innocent Mdledle has boldly declared he has “no doubt” the Soweto giants will defend their Betway Premiership title this season, citing ruthless competition within the squad.
The Buccaneers kicked off their title defence on a winning note, securing a 2-0 victory over Milford FC at a packed Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Soweto giants won the league title for the first time in 14 years after finishing top of the table ahead of rivals Mamelodi Sundowns last season.
Pirates have also made reinforcements when it comes to playing personnel as they seek to not only defend their title but compete in the CAF Champions League.

The new signings include Neo Rapoo, Aphiwe Baliti, Matome Mmolai, Bohlale Ngwato, Sbangani Zulu, Ghampani Lungu, Mthetheleli Mthiyane and Sebastian Pedersen.
Mdledle, who featured for the Buccaneers between 2005 and 2009, says squad depth will make them strong contenders both in the Champions League and the Premiership.
“Competition brings results, even if you sign five or more players in a season, the most important thing is that you play as a team,” Mdledle told FARPost.

“Like I said, if there is competition, it helps the team to win games. So for me I think it’s good that the club has brought in new faces because it helps the players or and new players grow as well. It also gives the club results.
“Pirates are always improving each and every season. They are the only team that has been trying to give problems to Mamelodi Sundowns. So definitely they are going to defend the title, I have no doubt about that.”
