Sekhukhune United veteran defender Daniel Cardoso has described Linda Mntambo’s retirement as a “sad story,” admitting that the midfielder’s exit leaves a massive void in the Babina Noko changing room.
Mntambo officially called time on a career spanning more than a decade at the age of 37 in June, stepping away from the professional game following a persistent struggle with recurring injuries.
The former Orlando Pirates, Chippa United, and Jomo Cosmos fan favourite joined Sekhukhune in 2022 and quickly established himself as a central pillar for the Limpopo side. In his 59 appearances for the club, Mntambo notched 13 goals and eight assists while wearing the captain’s armband, leading the team with distinction both on the pitch and behind closed doors.
Beyond his tactical value, ‘Figo’ was renowned across South African football for bringing infectious energy, song, and morale to every squad he represented.
Cardoso, a leader within the Babina Noko squad who steps into the role of team captain for the new campaign, acknowledged the weight of losing such an influential figure as Sekhukhune navigate the new season under new head coach Cedric Kaze, having lost key players alongside bringing in fresh talent.

Reflecting on the squad changes for the new 2026/27 season, Cardoso pointed out that replacing Mntambo’s presence goes beyond just filling a position on the matchday sheet.
“We lost senior players last season and brilliant players,” Cardoso said. “Linda’s retired, which is a sad story because he brought a lot of energy into our team, on the field and off the field.
“As I said, it’s a big loss. You know, Linda was the energy; he was the vibe. He brought happiness to the team, but we still have quite a few players that can still do that. There are a few youngsters that put up their hands and start singing in the change room and all of that, so he will be missed, but football has to go on, and we have other youngsters that will carry on from him.”
While Mntambo prioritised his health and family by stepping away from the game, Cardoso remains optimistic about the blend of experience and fresh talent stepping up to steer Sekhukhune forward.
“We still got a few players that stayed with us, and the new youngsters that have come on board have shown energy and shown that they want to be there and they’re hungry. So giving them a chance now and seeing how it goes.”
