The South African Football Association [SAFA] National Executive Committee [NEC] has endorsed Pitso Mosimane to take over from Hugo Broos as the new Bafana Bafana head coach, FARPost can reveal.
Mosimane was recommended by the SAFA Technical Committee to succeed Broos, who stepped down following a successful five-year tenure at the helm of the national team.
The veteran Belgian tactician took charge in 2021, transforming South Africa into a competitive force on the continent. During his reign, Broos led the nation to a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Côte d’Ivoire and guided Bafana to a historic Round of 32 finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they were eventually eliminated by co-hosts Canada.
SAFA NEC GIVES GREEN LIGHT FOR FORMAL CONTRACT TALKS WITH MOSIMANE
FARPost has established that NEC members, who convened for a crucial gathering at SAFA House in Nasrec on Saturday morning, voted unanimously to approve Mosimane’s return for a second stint in the national team hot seat.
It is further understood that the NEC has authorised the association’s executive leadership to open formal negotiations with Mosimane’s representatives to finalise the terms of his contract as soon as possible.
While an official public announcement on Saturday afternoon remains unlikely until the finer details of the contract are agreed upon, the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly mentor stands out as the sole candidate endorsed by the country’s highest football decision-making body.
SECOND STINT FOR SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST DECORATED COACH
The 62-year-old tactician previously managed the senior national team between 2010 and 2012, having initially served as an assistant to legendary Brazilian manager Carlos Alberto Parreira during the historic 2010 FIFA World Cup on home soil.
Since leaving the national setup, Mosimane has solidified his legacy as one of the continent’s elite coaches, winning multiple CAF Champions League titles and domestic trophies across Africa and the Middle East.
Should negotiations proceed without a hitch, Mosimane’s immediate task will be preparing the squad for the upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifiers, which kick off in September 2026.
Bafana Bafana are slated to open their Group D campaign at home against Guinea before travelling to face Eritrea, followed by a highly anticipated home clash against Benni McCarthy’s Kenya side in November.
