Orlando Pirates have officially parted ways with defender Deano van Rooyen, confirming his sudden departure from the Soweto giants by mutual consent following open discussions regarding his future.
The 29-year-old defender had not featured in any competitive match this season as he struggled for game time. However, his exit might come as a surprise as he appeared to be a right-back option for coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, who has been preferring Kamogelo Sebelele as a starter in that position.
Also making Van Rooyen’s departure a shocker is that it leaves Ouaddou thin at right-back, with Sebelebele the most recognised figure in that role, while Tshepo Mahiloane was sent out on loan at Sekhukhune United. Gamphani Lungu has been improvised on the right side of defence.
Signed from Stellenbosch FC by former Buccaneers coach Jose Riveiro, Van Rooyen was a regular and prominently featured when Pirates reached the 2024/25 CAF Champions League semi-finals. However, the arrival of Ouaddou saw him struggle for playing minutes last season, managing just 14 appearances across all competitions, including 10 Betway Premiership games as the Buccaneers clinched the league title for the first time since 2012.

In confirming Van Rooyen’s departure, Pirates revealed that the exit followed open and transparent discussions between the defender and the club’s management.
“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that Deano van Rooyen will be leaving the club, after the player and the club agreed to part ways by mutual consent,” Pirates announced on Friday morning.
“The decision follows open conversations between Deano and the Club, with both sides agreeing that the time is right for him to begin a new chapter in his career.
“Van Rooyen joined the Buccaneers from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2024/25 season, arriving as one of the most consistent full-backs in the Betway Premiership. At the Club, he delivered exactly what was asked of him. Whether starting or coming off the bench, Deano carried himself as a model professional throughout his time at the club – where he recorded over 50 appearances.
“Orlando Pirates Football Club would like to thank Deano for his contribution and wish him well in his future endeavours.”
