Betway Premiership reigning champions Orlando Pirates have completed the signing of highly-rated attacker Edmilson Chaney from Motsepe Foundation Championship side Hope FC.
The Cape-based club confirmed the 19-year-old’s departure on Monday, 31 August, via their official social media accounts.
As first reported by FARPost last month, the talented forward had drawn keen interest from several top-flight clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs, Durban City FC, TS Galaxy, and AmaZulu FC, following a standout campaign with Hope FC.
Chaney played an important role in leading Hope FC to the Western Cape ABC Motsepe League title last season. He carried that momentum into the SAFA ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs in Mthatha, Eastern Cape.
His stellar performances under then-head coach Dylan Deane helped the team secure promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after winning the national playoffs in June this year.
HOPE FC’S OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON EDMILSON CHANEY’S EXIT
In an official statement, Hope FC expressed pride in the youngster’s move to the Soweto giants.
“Edmilson ‘Millies’ Chaney departs Hope FC after completing a transfer to Orlando Pirates,” reads the club’s official statement.
“A young man who played an important role in our promotion and whose journey represents exactly what we want Hope FC to stand for — creating opportunities and pathways for young talent to reach the highest level.
“To Millies and his family, we wish you nothing but success on this next chapter.”
Chaney becomes the latest addition to the Buccaneers’ attack as they look to defend their Betway Premiership crown, adding to the likes of Gamphani Lungu, Bohlale Ngwato, and Sebastian Pedersen.
Hope FC currently sit ninth in the South African second tier, sitting on three points from their opening two matches following a 1-0 win over AmaTuks and a 1-0 loss to Highbury FC. Chaney never featured in any of those matches.
