SAFA are looking to bring AmaZulu FC head coach Arthur Zwane into the national teams’ setup on a part-time basis, in a role that would also support Pitso Mosimane’s work with Bafana Bafana, FARPost has learnt.
The association appointed Mosimane as Bafana head coach a week ago, with his long-time colleagues Musi Matlaba and Kabelo Rangoaga joining his backroom staff.
On Tuesday, SAFA confirmed that Morena Ramoreboli would leave his position as Botswana head coach to join Mosimane’s coaching staff. Mosimane’s technical team already includes three assistant coaches, a part-time goalkeeper coach, a masseur and an additional analyst, with the latter expected to join.
The association is not done strengthening the new-look technical team, with Zwane understood to be on its radar, albeit in a unique role. Under the proposed arrangement, Zwane would remain in charge of AmaZulu, where he is committed to the club’s project. His involvement with the national teams would be structured around his full-time duties at Usuthu.
Zwane’s primary responsibility would be to monitor the youth national teams, particularly the Under-23 side, while also keeping an eye on young players in the domestic league who are ready to step up to senior international football.
Known for his eye for talent, the former Kaizer Chiefs coach would help identify emerging players and ease their transition into the Bafana setup.
WHY SAFA WANT ARTHUR ZWANE IN THE BAFANA SETUP
SAFA want Mosimane to have enough quality coaches around him to oversee the various national team programmes and create a clearer pathway into the senior side.
Zwane’s involvement would help establish greater continuity from the youth structures to Bafana. Mosimane has already indicated that his technical team is not yet complete. However, some of the planned additions are complicated by the fact that the coaches under consideration are employed elsewhere. Ramoreboli stepped down as Botswana coach to join Mosimane full-time, while Zwane would combine his Bafana duties with his role at AmaZulu.
Affectionately known as 10111, Zwane has impressed since moving from Chiefs to Usuthu. He guided the KwaZulu-Natal club to a top-four finish last season, in his first campaign as their sole head coach.
AmaZulu have also started the new season strongly, picking up 10 points from their opening five matches to sit fourth in the table. SAFA want Mosimane’s technical team finalised before Bafana begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. South Africa host Guinea at Orlando Stadium on 26 September, then travel to face Eritrea four days later.
