Orlando Pirates legend Eugene Zwane has weighed in on whether loaning Zimbabwean international Daniel Msendami to Marumo Gallants was the right move for the Soweto giants.
The Buccaneers confirmed Msendami’s loan move on Wednesday, 9 September, as part of a double deal that saw the player, alongside Abdoulaye Mariko, head to the North West-based outfit on season-long loans.
In return, the Betway Premiership defending champions, Pirates, secured the permanent move of right-winger Bheki Mabuza from Bahlabane Ba Ntwa.
Msendami’s move marks a quick return to Gallants, the very club Pirates signed him from in January this year. The 25-year-old made eight appearances for the Sea Robbers last term. Before he was loaned out in the current campaign, he had already featured three times across all competitions for Pirates, finding the back of the net once.

Speaking on the logic behind the loan move, Zwane believes tactical considerations and squad depth played a primary role in the club’s decision.
“You know, I think it’s also a tactical thing to say, ‘Okay, given the profile of the player and what the player is likely to do for us, maybe we are sufficiently covered in that area,'” Zwane told FARPost in an exclusive interview.
“But he’s too valuable for the club to let him sit in the stands, so they decided to let him go somewhere where he will consistently play, and at the right time, they would bring him back. That could be one of the reasons behind the loan move.”

Zwane emphasised that a loan deal does not signal the end of a player’s long-term future at Pirates, but rather serves as a tool for tactical management and match fitness.
“You know, players are not always loaned out because they don’t have any value to add to their clubs,” he added. “It’s usually because of a particular area or the profile of the player; they already have several players with similar characteristics. Therefore, they loan the player out to continue playing and stay fit.”
