Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Darrel Matsheke has reunited with Gavin Hunt after returning to Stellenbosch FC for a second spell, FARPost has learnt.
The gritty defensive midfielder previously worked with Hunt at Naturena during the 2020/21 season, when he was promoted to the senior team and made his first-team breakthrough.
A Stellenbosch source confirmed to FARPost that the 27-year-old has signed a short-term deal with the Cape Winelands outfit. Matsheke completed his medical on Thursday before reporting for duty and training with his new teammates as he begins a fresh chapter at Stellies.
He is expected to play an important role in Hunt’s team this season. The four-time league-winning coach knows the midfielder’s qualities. Matsheke made 12 appearances under Hunt at Chiefs, including in the CAF Champions League, before eventually leaving Naturena.
His arrival gives Hunt another trusted option as he continues reshaping the Stellenbosch squad following several departures at the end of last season. The midfielder is expected to add steel, experience and competition in the middle of the park.
MATSHEKE RETURNS FOR SECOND STELLENBOSCH SPELL
Matsheke first joined Stellenbosch in 2023 following the expiry of his contract at Chiefs.
However, his first spell in the Cape Winelands lasted only a few months, with the two parties parting ways by mutual agreement in March 2024.
The former Amakhosi academy graduate subsequently joined Pretoria Callies, before a stint with Kruger United, who Stellenbosch face this weekend.
Kruger host Stellies in Mpumalanga as they search for their second win of the season. They recently picked up their first win over TS Galaxy.
The move hands Matsheke another opportunity to establish himself in the top flight. Crucially, he returns to work with a coach who knows him, trusts him and gave him his senior breakthrough at Chiefs.
