Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has explained his decision to recall Luther Singh to the national team setup ahead of the upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifiers, declaring that the winger is “coming to give people a run.”
Mosimane included Singh in his final squad, which he announced on Thursday at SAFA House in Nasrec. The talented winger is one of the few players returning to the Bafana setup in the new era under the leadership of the former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor.
While Mosimane did not make major changes to his squad, he has given an opportunity to in-form players such as Lebone Seema, Puso Dithejane, Shandre Campbell and Singh, among others.
Mosimane and his charges are gearing up for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea later this month.
In addition, South Africa will also lock horns with Egypt in an international friendly during the same FIFA international break.
Speaking after naming his first official squad since returning for a second stint as Bafana coach—succeeding Hugo Broos—Mosimane expressed excitement over the form of his wingers, while singling out Singh as a player hungry to showcase his talent.
WHAT MOSIMANE SAID ABOUT LUTHER SINGH
The former SA junior international has been in impressive form at club level with AEL Limassol in Cyprus after scoring nine goals and providing seven assists in the 2025/26 season.
“We are bringing the younger ones now and letting them show if they are ready to play and show that the jersey is not too big for them,” Mosimane said.
“You must also understand that it’s the coach’s opinion and the player’s opinion. You might feel that the previous coach might have neglected so and so; the same applies to me. You might think I’m neglecting a certain player.
“So we can’t put them all, but Shandre Campbell is playing week in and week out, and he’s fighting. He’s playing on the left and on the right. We are heavily loaded with the wingers.
“And I think if you are following, you will see how Luther Singh has matured; he is strong, and he is coming to give some people a run. So we want players who also score, we want players who assist, and players who have hunger, and I think he’s hungry. Let’s give him a chance.”
