Mamelodi Sundowns are closing in on the signing of highly rated AmaZulu FC defender Wandile Dube ahead of tonight’s transfer deadline, FARPost has established.
Reigning Betway Premiership champions, Orlando Pirates, had identified the 22-year-old as a potential addition and were eager to secure his services. However, information reaching this publication suggests Sundowns have moved ahead of the Buccaneers in the race for his signature.
Sundowns are now believed to be the frontrunners for Dube, with negotiations reportedly progressing. Indications are that an agreement could be reached before the transfer window closes.
AmaZulu recently exercised an option in Dube’s contract, extending his stay at the club until the end of the season. The Durban-based outfit was also reported to have offered the promising defender a new long-term deal.
Dube has yet to feature for the club this season, despite being fit and training with the rest of the team. The Brazilians view him as a future prospect at left centre-back, where they also have Bafana Bafana international Khulumani Ndamane.
SUNDOWNS HAVE MADE PROGRESS IN CHASE FOR WANDILE DUBE
Pirates showed firm interest in Dube and held talks with the KZN outfit about a potential transfer. But Sundowns, the current African champions, have since stepped up their pursuit and appear to have made significant progress towards concluding a deal with Usuthu.
Although the move is not yet finalised, indications are that talks between the parties have advanced, with the transfer potentially being completed before Monday’s deadline day.
Dube is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents to emerge at AmaZulu. He has previously earned praise from Usuthu coach Arthur Zwane.
“Dube has so much potential. He is a rare breed and can become a special player, but we obviously need time. With players like him, you don’t want to throw them into the deep end when the team is not doing well because there will be a lot of expectations,” Zwane said in a previous interview.
“You want to introduce him when things are going well so that he can settle nicely. When too much is expected from him, it puts him under pressure, and he may make mistakes that could either make him or break him.”
