Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s return from injury has been hailed as giving Chicago Fire FC their best chance of competing for glory this season, according to a Major League Soccer commentary analysis.
Last weekend, the 21-year-old returned to competitive football after struggling with a thigh strain since June. The former Orlando Pirates vice-captain played 80 minutes when Chicago Fire beat Charlotte FC 1-0 on Sunday.
He put in a solid display at the back to keep a clean sheet and help The Men in Red end a seven-match winless run. Initially, Mbokazi was expected to miss the rest of the season, but he recovered to full fitness earlier than expected
During his absence, Chicago Fire played 16 games. After starting life without South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup defender, the MLS side initially struggled, losing two games.
But they picked themselves up to win seven consecutive games. However, that was followed by a dip in form, as they conceded 15 goals in seven outings and their defensive frailties came to the fore.
THE STABILITY BROUGHT BY MBEKEZELI MBOKAZI FELT IN JUST ONE MATCH
On Mbokazi’s return, Chicago Fire returned to winning ways, and the defender’s five-star performance is being touted as key to helping his club’s ambitions. Chicago Fire are pushing for the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, which culminate in the MLS Cup championship match.
Mbokazi’s side is currently fifth in the MLS Eastern Conference. Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami are the holders of the MLS Cup, which features the winner of the Eastern Conference final and the victor of the Western Conference final.
“Simply put, it’s hard to overstate Mbokazi’s impact on Chicago’s defensive setup. The same was true for South Africa when he was shining at this summer’s FIFA World Cup,” reads the MLS commentary published on the league’s website.
“With elite defensive range, Mbokazi’s ability to sweep up danger behind the Fire’s backline has proven crucial in 2026. That was certainly the case for [Fire coach Gregg] Berhalter’s outfit over the weekend.
“Up against a Charlotte team eager to get out in transition, Mbokazi made it his mission to snuff out their host’s quick attacking forays. But it’s not just the youngster’s ability to get out and run that impresses. It’s also strength that creates a knack for winning the ball.
“Since Robert Lewandowski’s arrival in the forward line has altered Chicago’s defensive approach, having arguably MLS’s best pure centre-back return is a massive boon. With their restored backline, Chicago could catapult back into MLS Cup presented by Audi contention.”
