Following their near-miss in last season’s promotion playoffs, Cape Town City FC playmaker Gabriel Amato has addressed the expectations resting on the Citizens’ squad in the second tier.
The Citizens recently kicked off the 2026/27 Motsepe Foundation Championship season as they push for promotion back to the Betway Premiership.
CT City opened the season with three wins and two draws in five matches played so far in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, falling behind in the early race for automatic promotion. The John Comitis-owned team is currently sitting sixth on the league table, having collected eight points.
CT City are gunning for an improved showing this season after narrowly missing out on promotion in the previous campaign in the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs.
The Cape Town-based outfit finished the 2025/26 season in second position while Kruger United gained automatic promotion to the top flight.
With the promotion chase in the second division promising more excitement, Amato has revealed that CT City are pulling out all the stops to return to the Premiership.
WHAT AMATO SAID ABOUT CAPE TOWN CITY’S PROMOTION AMBITIONS

The 2018 MTN8 champions suffered relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2024/25 season.
“Of course [we want to win the league], even last season our goal was to win the league,” the talented attacker said.
“So we want to take it a step further; we came second last season. Now we want to push for that title. It’s not going to be easy at all, but we have to do it, and it’s what we can do if we apply ourselves.”
Cape Town City return to action on Sunday, 11 October, when they host The Bees in a league clash, aiming to secure maximum points and climb up the standings.
