Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya has reacted to being named the Scottish Premiership Player of the Month for September, marking his first individual award since joining Rangers FC.
The 22-year-old joined the Scottish club from MLS side Philadelphia Union at the start of the 2026/27 season and has quickly established himself as a vital cog in Derek McInnes’ squad.
Having featured in six Scottish Premiership matches, Makhanya has won his first award in the highly-rated league. In addition, he was recognised alongside his coach McInnes, who was named Manager of the Month after guiding Rangers through a perfect September.
The Glasgow giants kept four clean sheets in the five matches played during the month, and the towering Makhanya was the standout defender as the team sits in second place behind Celtic, who sit top of the table.
Reacting to his strong start at Rangers, Makhanya, who is also establishing himself in the Bafana Bafana set-up, expressed his gratitude for the support he has received.

THE COACHES ARE HELPING ME IMPROVE EVERYDAY SAYS OLWETHU MAKHANYA
“I am really proud to receive this award, and I’d like to thank my teammates and all the staff for their support,” Makhanya said on the Rangers FC website.
“They have helped me settle in and feel part of the group, and that makes a big difference when you come to a new club. The coaches are helping me improve every day, and my teammates give me confidence on the pitch.
“I’m pleased to have been able to contribute to the team. I’m grateful to the supporters for the backing they have given me. I want to keep working hard, keep improving and help the team get the results we want.”
For him, the award is undoubtedly a significant milestone as his stay at the club promises to be a fruitful adventure. Without a doubt, Makhanya’s progress will be music to the ears of the Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane and his technical team, as they expect their stars to be a cut above the rest in their respective clubs abroad.
