The New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane is set to host its first match of the 2026/27 Premier Soccer League season [PSL] on Saturday, 17 October.

The facility, which hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup, has not been used since the start of the season because of the pitch rehabilitation process.

This also meant the facility missed out on hosting the 2026 MTN8 final, a competition FARPost had established that the Polokwane Municipality was keen to host.

However, the rehabilitation at the stadium is now complete and has been given the thumbs up for the Betway Premiership match between Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants starting at 18:00 on Saturday.

Manager of Communications for Polokwane Municipality, Thipa Selala, has told FARPost that the facility has now been given the thumbs up by the PSL.

โ€œWe are immensely encouraged by the overwhelming support our people continue to demonstrate for our football teams,โ€ said Selala.

โ€œThis passion for the beautiful game is a source of pride for Polokwane, and we urge supporters to come out in their numbers to fill the stands, rally behind their teams and experience football at its finest on a world-class pitch.โ€

SEKHUKHUNE UNITED TO WELCOME MARUMO GALLANTS AT THEIR ORIGINAL HOME GROUND

FARPost visited the facility on Wednesday, where the pitch looks in good condition ahead of the league encounter.

โ€œOur ambition is to position Polokwane as a leading sporting hub in Southern Africa,โ€ added Selala.

โ€œAs the Municipality, we are pursuing this vision through deliberate investment in sporting infrastructure and initiatives that bring opportunities closer to our people. We are taking elite football into our townships and investing in stadium infrastructure in our rural communities to expand access to sport, nurture local talent and ensure that sporting development is not confined to the city centre.โ€

โ€œWe are building a municipality where sporting excellence, grassroots participation and economic opportunity go hand in hand. Communities need to be active participants in the sporting economy, while creating an environment that attracts major sporting events, teams, supporters and investors to Polokwane.โ€

Meanwhile, besides the Sekhukhune United home matches, the New Peter Mokaba Stadium is also set to host some home fixtures for Kaizer Chiefs.

Chiefs and the municipality remain locked into a partnership through the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
