Ex-Kaizer Chiefs marksman Knowledge Musona has been drafted into Scottland FC’s technical team as a player-coach following the sacking of head coach Norman Mapeza.
Mapeza was dismissed over the weekend following the club’s dramatic exit from the CAF Champions League, where they squandered a two-goal advantage from the first leg to lose 3-2 on aggregate to Angolan giants Petro de Luanda.
The CAF Champions League exit proved to be the final nail in Mapeza’s coffin, following a turbulent spell where Scottland repeatedly squandered opportunities to pull away at the top of the Zimbabwean domestic standings.
Scottland, a star-studded team, fell down the pecking order, having led the Zimbabwe Castle Lager Premier Soccer League log table by nine points at some point. Hardrock FC now have 69 points while Scottland sit on 61 points.
However, with just four games left for them to play, Scottland find themselves trailing by eight points behind Hardrock FC, who have played two games more than them. As a result, Scottland have rung the changes in the technical team and Knowledge Musona has become the surprise inclusion.
FORMER KAIZER CHIEFS STAR KNOWLEDGE MUSONA ELEVATED AT SCOTTLAND FC
Musona, one of the team’s key players as they aimed to conquer Africa and win a second successive league title, has been appointed player-coach. The 36-year-old has scored ten goals in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League so far this season.
Musona was recently spotted attending a coaching course in Namibia and has subsequently been appointed to be one of the think-tanks working with former Mamelodi Sundowns team manager Peter Ndlovu, who will be head coach on an interim basis.
The former Kaizer Chiefs man is the second assistant coach, while Danger Fourpence is the first assistant coach. Former Free State Stars goalkeeper Talbert Shumba is the goalkeepers’ coach. Shumba has been in their ranks as the third-choice keeper.
With an eight-point deficit separating them from league leaders Hardbody FC, Scottland FC face an uphill battle to keep their title hopes alive. Ndlovu’s interim tenure will be defined by their final four fixtures, where they take on Chicken Inn FC, CAPS United, Herentals College FC, and Triangle United.
