Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane has explained his role following his appointment at SAFA Limpopo ABC Motsepe League side Phinnet City FC.
Mabokgwane recently joined the club as a goalkeeper coach while also playing the role of a co-coach.
The 38-year-old has been unattached since he parted ways with Betway Premiership side Richards Bay in 2024.
In his career spanning over 12 years, Mabokgwane played for clubs such as Bidvest Wits, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City, Baroka FC and Black Leopards.
The former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper recently opened Jacco Specialised goalkeeping training that specialises in one-on-one sessions with both male and female goalkeepers in Westenburg, outside Polokwane, Limpopo.
HOW JACKSON MABOKGWANE JUGGLES BETWEEN HIS NEW ROLE AND HIS GOALKEEPER ACADEMY
Mabokgwane has opened up to FARPost on how he juggles between the two roles, also clarifying that he has joined the club on a part-time basis.
“So basically I am assisting at the club in terms of coaching the goalkeepers and as an assistant coach,” Mabokgwane told FARPost.

“As you know I have a programme of coaching kids. So it’s part of the project as well. Obviously we had discussions and they asked me to come and assist in that department.
“Nothing had changed [with regard to his personal goalkeeper project], basically with Phinnet, it’s a temporary arrangement. I am still an independent contractor. So they obviously roped me in to come and assist, so I can not be on a full time basis as you know I have a project that I am doing.”

His presence has already been felt at the club based at the University of Limpopo after three clean sheets in their opening three matches.
Mabokgwane has described the brief experience of coaching as his passion and something that he has always been keen on even during his playing days.
“It’s very nice. It’s something that to be honest I have always been a player that has been involved, especially in my senior playing days, where I have always been vocal,” added Mabokgwane.
“Whether I am on the bench, I would always assist and give instructions. So I was not a senior player who was just there folding his arms. So it’s something that I have always been passionate about, same with analysis.”
