Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has explained why Rushwin Dortley’s long-awaited return from injury has given the coaching staff a welcome selection dilemma ahead of their upcoming PSL fixtures.

The highly-rated centre-back made his much-anticipated comeback during Chiefs’ midweek Carling Knockout Cup Last-16 clash against TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium.

Amakhosi brushed aside the Rockets with an emphatic 3–0 victory to book their spot in the quarter-finals, where they will face Siwelele FC.

Making his first appearance of the 2026/27 season, Dortley partnered Thabo Moloisane at the heart of the defence. The left-footed centre-back put in a solid performance to help Chiefs secure a clean sheet.

Speaking at the Soweto Derby pre-match press conference in Randburg on Thursday, Petersen welcomed Dortley back into the fold, noting that his availability provides much-needed defensive stability and squad depth.

KAIZER CHIEFS CAPTAIN WELCOMES THE RETURN OF RUSHWIN DORTLEY

“It’s a confidence booster for the team knowing that we have another player available. I think it gives a good headache to the coaches,” Petersen said.

“So it’s amazing to see him [Dortley] back. It’s been amazing seeing him on the field, and I know it was very emotional for him, but he’s a phenomenal player; we all know what he’s about. And I think seeing him on the field brings joy to a lot of people. As I said, it’s always good for the team to have as many players available, not just for this week [Soweto Derby] but as many games as we can.”

Dortley was sidelined for the entire 2025/26 campaign while recovering from a severe injury sustained during his debut season with the Naturena-based side.

The talented defender joined Chiefs in July 2024 from Cape Town Spurs and quickly became a key figure in the squad, making 20 appearances across all competitions before his forced spell on the sidelines.

The 24-year-old will now aim to play a vital role at the back as Chiefs prepare to host fierce rivals Orlando Pirates in a blockbuster Betway Premiership clash this Saturday at a sold-out FNB Stadium [15:30 CAT].

Heading into the derby, Chiefs and Pirates are high on confidence, having scored three goals in their respective Carling Cup matches against Galaxy and Milford FC respectively in midweek.
