Sundowns seal Carling Knockout semi-final spot after Arrows win: Five key takeaways

Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows at Loftus Versfeld Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows on Tuesday night at Loftus Versfeld Stadium to book their place in the Carling Knockout Cup semi-finals.

A solitary 68th-minute strike from Bafana Bafana international Iqraam Rayners proved to be the difference, set up by a precise assist from Antonio Van Wyk.

Here are the five key takeaways from the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final clash.

1. MAMELODI SUNDOWNS MAKE EIGHT SQUAD ROTATIONS

Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso opted for squad rotation, making eight changes to the starting line-up that previously faced Durban City FC.

In their previous fixture, the Tshwane club lined up with Ricardo Goss, Khulumani Ndamane, Malibongwe Khoza, Thabang Matuludi, Aubrey Modiba, Bathusi Aubaas, Marcelo Allende, Nuno Santos, Tashreeq Matthews, Cassius Mailula, and Bryan Leon.

For the encounter against Arrows, only Goss, Khoza, and Aubaas retained their spots. The team looked fresh, with Thapelo Morena, Mothobi Mvala, Fawaaz Basadien, Sphelele Mkhulise, Arthur Sales, Siyanda Ndlovu, Antonio Van Wyk, and match-winner Iqraam Rayners all coming into the XI.

2. RONWEN WILLIAMS AND TEBOHO MOKOENA REMAIN SIDELINED

Masandawana were once again without two of their key figures, Teboho Mokoena and Ronwen Williams.

Mokoena missed his fourth consecutive match for the Chloorkop side due to a knee ligament injury—a recurrence of the issue that troubled him while on international duty with Bafana Bafana.

Meanwhile, first-choice goalkeeper Williams sat out his third straight game as a precaution after a minor knock sustained in training.

3. MAMELODI SUNDOWNS DEFENCE NEUTRALISES JUNIOR DION

Arrows frontman Junior Dion entered the match as a major threat, having scored in each of his last five consecutive appearances against Sundowns across all competitions.

However, the Bafana Ba Style backline delivered a disciplined performance, keeping the danger man quiet throughout the contest.

4. GOLDEN ARROWS’ RESILIENT FIRST-HALF DISPLAY

The Mandla Ncikazi-led side showcased strong defensive organisation in the opening 45 minutes, holding the hosts to a goalless draw at the interval.

The KwaZulu-Natal side maintained a compact structure to frustrate Sundowns’ attack before Rayners finally broke the deadlock midway through the second half.

5. SIYANDA NDLOVU WALKS WITH THE CHAMPION MAN OF THE MATCH

Siyanda Ndlovu walked away with the Man of the Match accolade against his former side. To top it off, Ndlovu was also the Man of the Match in the tournament’s Round of 16 when they beat Marumo Gallants 1-0.
