COSAFA clarifies CAF Women’s Champions League qualification

COSAFA has clarified the issue of qualification for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League set for Morocco later in the year.

Reigning African champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies already have their place secure as defending champs and will be joined by the ongoing Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Champions League winner.

In the event that Sundowns retain the regional title, the runner-up in Saturday’s final will qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League.

“We will have two teams at the (continental) championship,” says Brenda Kunda, chairperson of the COSAFA Women’s Committee and COSAFA Executive Committee member.

“Sundowns will be defending champions, and whichever side is the best in this competition, or the best runner-up, will get to the finals in Morocco.

“There are so many developments in this region. We are doing well in all facets, from playing to refereeing and administration. That is reflected in the rise in standard on the field.”

The Jerry Tshabalala-coached Downs looks set to retain the title after an emphatic start to their title challenge. They humiliated Mozambique’s Costa do Sol 8-1 in a Group A tie played on Sunday.

Zambia’s Green Buffaloes hammered Eswatini’s Young Buffaloes 4-0 in a Group B encounter. Sandawana boast of fine talents, some who were part of the history-making Banyana Banyana side.

On Tuesday, the Brazilians face Botswana’s Double Action, who will be out to revenge after being trounced 6-0 in last year’s edition.

Kick-off is at 12h00 at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium. In another fixture set for Tuesday, Comoros debutantes Olympique de Moroni clash with Green Buffaloes [15h30] in a Group B fixture.

A win for Buffaloes will secure their place in the final with a win.
