Ex-Cape Town City defender keeps options open
Mozambican defender Edmilson Dove has said injuries contributed to his exit from Cape Town City, but he has kept his options open. He has not ruled out a return to South Africa.
Dove said this in a post-match interview of a Cosafa Cup quarterfinal game which saw Mozambique beat South Africa in Durban on Wednesday.
The left-back said he was delighted being back in his “second home with my people.”
The 27-year-old, who now plays for former Mozambique league champions UD Songo, said he hoped to be back in South Africa soon.
“After my injury, a lot of things did not go the way I wanted them to go, but I cannot dwell on that…doors will open, and I am willing to take the next step when that happens,” he said.
Dove said he was now helping the new generation of Mozambican players to appreciate the importance of playing in international competitions such as Cosafa.
He described the game against South Africa as tough, adding that what mattered for the Mambas was getting over the line and dating Namibia in the semifinal.
“It was a difficult game. We all know that South Africa has a lot of talented players. All we wanted was to win, and that is what we got. We don’t have a lot of time to enjoy it knowing that we have a game against Namibia,” he said.
Dove signed for City in 2017 but left at the start of last season, telling coach Eric Tinkler that he wanted regular game-time, which he was not guaranteed at the club.
