Former Uganda coach takes over DRC job

Former Uganda’s Cranes French coach Sebastien Desabre has been appointed as the new trainer for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), hoping to revive the Leopards flagging fortunes.

The Frenchman has replaced Italian Hector Cuper, who was sacked after failing to lead the Leopards to the delayed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, which took place between January and February this year in Cameroon.

A statement from the Congolese Federation of Football Association has confirmed the appointment of the former Uganda and Pyramids FC trainer.

“The decision was taken during the meeting of the executive committee of the federation held this Saturday, August 6, 2022,” the statement reads.

“The 46-year-old French technician has trained several African clubs, including Pyramids and WAC, as well as the national team.”

Desabre has coached all over Africa, and he made history after leading Uganda to the knockout stages of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Frenchman then joined Pyramids a day after resigning from Uganda’s coaching job following the Cranes’ 1-0 loss to favourites Senegal’s Teranga Lions.

However, his adventure in Egypt did not last long as he was sacked due to a run of poor results in the same year.

However, Desabre’s statistics were not bad as he won 12 games out on 19, in which he lost three and drew four, but he was still shown the exit door in Egypt, where had had previously coached Ismaily.

Desabre has spent the last couple of years coaching French Ligue lower league teams such as Niort and Chamois.

The 46-year-old also had a stint in Morocco with giants Wydad Casablanca three years ago and also managed teams in Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Tunisia and Angola and Cameroon.
