Mbulu on the verge of joining new club
Former Baroka forward Richard Mbulu is on the verge of joining a new club after parting ways with the Limpopo outfit.
The Malawian striker’s contract ended in June, and the demoted club could not convince him to extend his stay. They will play their football in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, formerly GladAfrica, next season.
According to an impeccable source, The Flames attacker has been at Zesco in Zambia, and they are keen on signing him.
“He’s not returning to Baroka because he’s been in Zambia with Zesco, and it looks like they will sign him. He has impressed so far, and Zesco United could finalise the deal in the coming days. He’s playing in a four-team pre-season tournament currently going on,” said the source.
On Friday, he started in a friendly match against Green Eagles. The Malawian international had a poor return last season, scoring three goals in 23 DStv Premiership games.
He has been in the books of Bakgaga since 2019, having joined the club from Mozambican outfit Costa do Sol. He recently told FARPost that his three-year contract would run its course, and there were no indications he would stay on.
“My contract with Baroka expires on June 30 2022, and so far, there is no discussion regarding my future with Baroka. It is holiday time for me at the moment,” he said at the time.
There was rumoured interest from Golden Arrows and Maritzburg but nothing came out of it. Mbulu is a military officer with the Malawi Defence Forces.
The Zambia Super League giants have already signed another former Baroka player, goalkeeper Cyril Chibwe. The national team goalie, who was part of the COSAFA Cup-winning squad recently penned a two-year deal with Timu Ya Ziko.
Chibwe, who also had a stint with Polokwane City and Platinum Stars, faces stiff competition from Kenya international Ian Otieno and Gregory Sanjase.
They take part in the CAF Confederations Cup and would need to have enough depth to challenge domestically and on the continent.
CAF recently confirmed that Red Arrows would play in the Champions League while Zesco United will be the flag carriers in the second-tier continental title.
