Orlando Pirates’ slayers Eagles eye Zambian title

The Zambian club that once eliminated Orlando Pirates from the preliminary stage of the 2019/20 CAF Champions League has set a bold target to win the 2022/23 FAZ Super League title.

Green Eagles have never won the Zambian title but have been a regular top four finisher since 2017.

The only top-flight club from the Southern Province, where they are based in the agro-business town of Choma, came close to winning the League in the 2019 campaign when they finished runners-up to nine-time champions Zesco United.

Eagles famously beat Pirates 1-0 at home in Lusaka and drew 1-1 away in Johannesburg but made a CAF Champions League second-round exit at the hands of Angolan club Primeiro de Agosto.

Coach Aggrey Chiyangi, who engineered that famous result, is still at the helm of the Eagles since his appointment in 2017.

Chiyangi said that now that Zambia has lost the privilege of fielding four clubs in the continental competition, the race to finish in the top two is very competitive this season.

“I think, for now, the only thing that we have to look at is we have to go for the league title because they are only two CAF slots that we are fighting for,” Chiyangi said.

“So you can no longer look and say you have to finish in the top four at the end of the season. The focus now is to say let’s go all the way, and that is what we are going to work on.”

Zambian club’s limited performances in the group stages of both CAF competitions over the last three seasons, the Champions League and Confederation Cup have seen them lose an extra slot in the two continental club competitions.

First and second represented Zambia in the CAF Champions League, while third and fourth finishers participated in the CAF Confederation Cup. Libyan clubs have replaced Zambia in that coveted CAF Top 12.
