Zambia’s Zesco in prospective debut KZN visit
Nine-time Zambian champions Zesco United have a potential debut trip to KZN this October in the second round of the 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup.
Zesco enjoys a preliminary stage bye in this season’s CAF Confederation Cup that kicks off in September.
The Ndola club awaits the winner of the tie between the SA PSL side and continental debutants Royal AM versus Mbabane Highlanders of Eswatini.
Royal AM will be away in the first leg in Eswatini during the weekend of September 9-11 and at home during the weekend of September 16-18 in Durban.
Zesco will later face the winner away in the first leg during the weekend of October 7-9.
The final leg will be played on September 15 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The winner of that second round tie will advance to the competition’s pre-group stage where they will be drawn against a team relegated from
October’s CAF Champions League pre-group stage.
Zesco has never ventured beyond Gauteng in continental competition.
The Ndola club was eliminated from the 2016 CAF Champions League at the semifinal stage by eventual winners Mamelodi Sundowns.
The following season, SuperSport United ejected Zesco from the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals.
But Zesco were more fortunate with their third South African opponent when they ejected Kaizer Chiefs from the 2018/2019 CAF Confederation Cup pre-group stage.
