Al Ahly’s Percy Tau dilemma

It is no secret that Pitso Mosimane is a big admirer of Percy Tau. The Bafana Bafana talisman played a role as Mosimane won his first Caf Champions League title in 2016 with Mamelodi Sundowns. The two reunited in Cairo last year after a frustrating spell at Brighton and Hove Albion for the Witbank-born star.

The investment

He reportedly earns in the region of R1.5 million per month at Ahly. The Red Devils had to tap deep into their pockets to lure him from Europe. According to reports, Ahly had to fork out approximately R32 million [about €1.9 million] to sign Tau from the English Premier League side.

The Bafana star still had one year left on his Brighton contract, and the Egyptian giants had to purchase him from the Seagulls.

The dilemma

The former Sundowns star has been underwhelming at the Cairo giants, notching eight goals in 25 matches across all competitions.  An Egyptian football journalist Tarek Talaat explains the dilemma. “It’s tricky because they paid a lot of money for him, and it won’t be easy to let go of him unless they get a club willing to pay in the same region.

On the other hand, he’s not done too well, and some feel he doesn’t deserve to play for the club,” Talaat said, adding his goal return was not so impressive. It remains to be seen whether Tau will find his feet without his mentor Mosimane.
