Banyana sink Algeria in AWCON Qualifiers
Banyana Banyana have defeated Algeria 2-0 in the first leg of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) Qualifier at Orlando Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Thanks to goals by Hildah Magaia and Thembi Kgatlana.
Desiree Ellis’ side looked bright coming out of their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Zambia’s Copper Queens in an international friendly match this past weekend.
And a win is precisely what they got this time around. South Africa opened the scoring just five minutes before the half-time break through Magaia.
There was plenty of spice on and off the pitch, while both managers were animated on the touchline.
The showdown was one of the most thrilling matches of the AWCON Qualifiers and it did not disappoint.
And perhaps none have shone as brightly as Atletico Madrid frontwoman Thembi Kgatlana, who added to the scoreline in the 89th minute of the contest.
Banyana continued to control the game without too much trouble, saving plenty of energy for the celebrations at the final whistle.
South Africa will face the North Africans in the return leg scheduled for 23 February in Algiers, Algeria.
