Bernard Parker resurfaces at PSL side
After parting ways with Kaizer Chiefs, former Bafana Bafana forward Bernard Parker has resurfaced at a DStv Premiership side.
Amakhosi announced his contract with the club would not be extended in June alongside several other players, including Samir Nurkovic, Leonardo Castro, Lebogang Manyama, Daniel Cardoso, Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, Anthony Akumu, Lazarous Kambole, Dumisani Zulu, Kearyn Baccus and Ramahlwe Mphahlele.
Nurkovic [Royal AM], Cardoso and Ntiya-Ntiya [Sekhukhune], Zulu [AmaZulu] and Baccus [Australian A-League side Macarthur FC] have already found new homes.
With Parker, reports were that Chiefs were mulling on offering him a non-playing position after serving the club with distinction for 11 years.
However, FARPost can reveal that Parker has started training with SuperSport United, where his former Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt recently took over as head coach.
“He trained with the team, and he looks sharp. Gavin regards him highly, so anything can happen,” the source said.
Mphahlele was also spotted at the club recently, but his was a different case with indications he had requested to train to keep fit.
Hunt is a known admirer of Parker, who often captained Amakhosi under his tutelage. The ex-Bafana striker’s career spans nearly 20 years, 11 of which were at Naturena.
He featured in over 350 competitive games for Chiefs, scoring 64 goals. When releasing Parker, the club hailed him for his exceptional leadership after helping Amakhosi win four major trophies, including two league titles.
The club said his professionalism, both on and off the field, was an example to aspiring young footballers. Besides the two league titles [2013/13, 2014/15], ‘Hond’ also won the Nedbank Cup [2012/13] and MTN8 [2015/16].
During the 2013/14 season, he walked away with the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot Award and the 2014 African Nations Championship Golden Boot.
However, in the last eight years, the club has struggled to win any major trophies, forcing an overhaul ahead of the new season. With Arthur Zwane at the helm, the club has brought in new players expected to challenge for honours this season.
