BREAKING NEWS: Latest on Williams to Sundowns
Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was spotted at Chloorkop – the home of Mamelodi Sundowns – this afternoon, just after 16h00.
A FARPost source at Sundowns confirmed that the SuperSport goalie arrived with two gentlemen with indications the move would be sealed soon.
“He literally arrived moments ago with two gentlemen. It looks like the deal will be concluded soon,” the source said.
Interestingly, a FARPost crew at The Ranch in Polokwane, where SuperSport is holding their pre-season camp, confirmed the 30-year-old was not part of their afternoon session.
The development comes after Downs co-head coach Rulani Mokwena told SABC Sport there was room for Williams at the club. The DStv Premiership champions are home to two highly rated former internationals, Denis Onyango, 37, and Kennedy Mweene, 37.
The national broadcaster on Sunday reported that the delay in the deal was partly due to the disagreement between the two clubs on how the matter of Ricardo Goss will be handled.
Reports are that Goss is heading to SuperSport United as Sundowns prepare to welcome Williams to Chloorkop.
“We’ve always got space for good players, I don’t know who’s the national team captain, but we’ve always got space for good players. We want the best players, and if the best players so happen to be available, then we move in that space,” Mokwena told SABC.
Mokwena further said the goalkeeping department was a position that needed long-term investment with Onyango and Mweene approaching 40.
“They know, and they are already incredible servants of this club – Kennedy and Denis have done so much for Mamelodi Sundowns, but the reality is that we race against Mother Nature, and you’ve always got to try to make sure you are prepared to start a new race.
“But look, it’s not as easy as it seems, and I’m sure the club will make the necessary announcements in due course.”
