Chippa appoint ex-Pirates midfielder as head coach

Chippa United have appointed Daine Klate as their new head coach for the 2022/23 season.

The 37-year-old mentor will be assisted by Bruce July and Siya Gwambi.

Klate takes over the role that was held by Kurt Lentjies, who has been placed on “special leave” by the Chilli Boys.

The former Orlando Pirates man served as Chippa’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) coach for the past two seasons.

The DDC side is currently in the semifinals of the DStv Diski Shield.

The new man in charge holds FIFA B licence coaching credentials and awaiting completion of his A licence.

Klate started his football career at Glenville Celtic at the age of 15, before moving to Gauteng to play for the Transnet School of Excellence.

In 2002, he joined the Supersport United Feyenoord youth academy until being promoted to the club’s first team as a 19-year-old in 2004.

He made over 100 league appearances for Matsatsantsa. He was one of the key players in SuperSport’s back-to-back Premiership wins in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Klate left the Tshwane-based outfit to join Pirates at the beginning of the 2010/11 campaign and went on to win the treble that season.

He also represented teams such as Bidvest Wits and Chippa United, where he later retired from professional football.

Klate is one of the most decorated players in South Africa having won the league title five times.
