Kaizer Chiefs linked forward agrees deal to join Richards Bay
Richards Bay have agreed to sign a 20-goal international forward who was recently linked with Kaizer Chiefs.
Katleho Makateng will sign a two-year contract at the KZN side ahead of the 2022/23 season.
The 23-year-old is expected in the country on Monday to complete his move to the DStv Premiership.
The lanky forward has been impressive for army side Lesotho Defence Forces, who play in the Lesotho Premier League. Following his exploits in the domestic league, Makateng was called to the national team and played at the Cosafa Cup held in Durban.
He was on target in a 2-1 victory over Malawi, attracting the interest of local clubs with his fine performances. It has since been confirmed to FARPost by a source within Richards Bay camp that Natal Rich Boyz have reached an agreement to sign the Likuena attacker.
“He’s expected to arrive in the country on Monday to complete his move, but he has agreed to a two-year deal,” the source said. Makateng is the reigning Lesotho Premier League Top goal scorer with 20 strikes during the 2021/22 season.
He made history by becoming the first player in the history of Lesotho to win four awards in one season. The pacy marksman was crowned Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season, Young Player of the Season, and the Golden Boot Award.
His four awards earned him a total of R50 000 in prize monies. Meanwhile, Lesotho Defence Forces on Friday revealed that Richards Bay FC were the only club they were in talks with regarding the striker. The club further said they had not received any formal offer from Chiefs.
Makateng announced his arrival on international stage with a brace in March when Likuena beat Seychelles 3-1 in the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Richards Bay, who won last season’s second-tier league title, are bolstering their squad with the season set to start early next month. They have already signed the Orlando Pirates duo of Abel Mabaso and Nkanyiso Zungu. Michael Gumede, Yanela Mbuthuma, Matome Mabeba and Thulani Gumede also join them.
Former Stellenbosch player Sibusiso Mthethwa, Sanele Barns, Siyanda Dlamini, Ndiviwe Mdabuka, Neil Boshoff and Ugandan international Omar Salim Magoola will also form part of the KZN side’s team next season.
