Paseka Mako’s first words to Pirates’ new signing Nkosinathi Sibisi
Newly signed Orlando Pirates defender Nkosinathi Sibisi has revealed what his new teammate Paseka Mako’s first words to him were.
Sibisi arrived at the Buccaneers two months ago ahead of the 2022/23 season. Speaking to the club’s website, he recalled Mako’s remarks when they met for the first time as Bucs players.
“It sure has made things a lot easier [reuniting with familiar faces], and everyone in the group has been welcoming. I can even recall my first time coming to a training session, and Paseka Mako actually came to me and said, “UNkulunkulu mkhulu (God is great). I’ve wanted you on our side for a long time”. The energy I’ve gotten from all of the guys has been quite welcoming,” he said.
The former Golden Arrows captain, who was among the first signings announced by the club, Tapelo Xoki from AmaZulu, Marumo Gallants’ Miguel Timm, Eva Nga from Chippa United and Evidence Makgopa have joined Bucs ahead of the new season.
His move to the Soweto giants ended a seven-year stay at DStv Premiership rivals Golden Arrows, which began with a successful tenure as captain of the side’s Reserve League outfit.
Following another solid showing in the 2021/22 season, the 26-year-old has agreed on a deal with Pirates, where he has reunited with some familiar faces and is set for a massive role following some high-profile departures during the ongoing transfer window.
“It’s an honour and a privilege. I never thought it would happen. I can safely say it’s something beyond my wildest dreams,” the Bafana Bafana defender said.
He noted the differences between his former team and the Bucs. “It is quite different. For instance, during preseason at Arrows, we weren’t used to going to camp. Not only that, there’s other off-field stuff such as photo shoots. It’s been quite different, so I’ve had to adjust to that as well.”
The Bafana defender is anticipating stiff competition with Oliseh Ndah, Xoki and newly appointed captain Innocent Maela for the centre-back position.
“Yeah, there’s competition, but I think competition is healthy. It brings out the best in everyone. Regardless of who is playing in that particular position, there’s always someone pushing the next person.”
He, however, believes he brings a competitive edge to the team. “I just want to compete and be the best I can be and hopefully help the team going forward.”
Sibisi is looking forward to playing in the Soweto derby. “I’ve played a couple of derbies before. I think this one won’t be any different. But yeah, I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.
