Pitso Mosimane misses out on CAF Award final shortlist
Former Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has missed out on the final three-member shortlist for the men’s CAF Coach of the Year 2022 Award.
CAF has announced the finalists, with Senegal’s 2021 AFCON-winning mentor Aliou Cisse set to compete for the award alongside Carlos Quieroz (ex-Egypt coach) and Walid Regragui of Wydad Athletics.
The Portuguese earned the shortlist for helping Egypt reach the final 2021 AFCON.
The former Bafana Bafana trainer is in the running for the award alongside Regragui, whose Wydad Athletics’ 2-0 beating of Al Ahly 2-0 in the CAF Champions League final might have influenced the South African Mosimane’s resignation from Al Ahly.
There is a strong presence of South Africans in the women’s CAF Coach of the Year race, with Banyana Banyana’s Desiree Ellis up against Mamelodi Sundowns’ Jerry Shabalala, Bruce Mwape of Zambia and Morocco’s Reynald Pedros.
Sundowns ladies will also slug it out for the women’s CAF Club of the Year accolade alongside AS FAR (Morocco) and Hasaacas Ladies (Ghana). In contrast, the men’s side has Al Ahly, RS Berkane and Wydad Athletic as the finalists.
Andile Dlamini of Sundowns Ladies also has a chance to win the Inter-Club Player of the Year award for women’s football after earning nominations alongside team-mate Bambanani Mbanie and Evely Badu from Ghana’s Sekondi Ladies.
The Men’s Player of the Year race is among Sadio Mane (Liverpool, Senegal), Edouard Mendy (Chelsea, Senegal) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool, Egypt)
The men’s National Team of the Year race has attracted Cameroon, Senegal and Egypt, but there is none for women due to limited competitions during the calendar year.
As FARPost reported earlier, AmaZulu’s Gabadinho Mhango will compete for the CAF Goal of the Year gong alongside Pape Ousmane (Simba) and Morocco‘s Zouhair El Moutaraji.
CAF will announce the winners on July 23 in Morocco during the Women’s AFCON final between Banyana Banyana and the hosts Atlas Lionesses.

Due to the absence of a major women’s competition during the period under review, the Organising Team for the CAF Awards 2022 has reviewed the selection process for this important category. The TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco will be factored in as one of the criteria in deciding a winner befitting the award’s status and women’s football in general. The winner will be announced on 23 July 2022 during the final match of the Women’s AFCON.
