Former Mamelodi Sundowns skipper Hlompho Kekana this week called time on his playing career, marking an end to his illustrious career. The 37-year-old has been a free agent since the end of 2020/21 season after he was released by the club.

Kekana known by goalkeepers for his long range strikes started his career at Limpopo outfit Black Leopards in the early 2000s before making a move to SuperSport United to work with Gavin Hunt. He then joined Bloemfontein Celtic now known as Royal AM for a single season, then linked with Sundowns.

The Zebediela-born star joined the Matsatsantsa in 2006/07 season. Due to his work rate, he became a regular at the club bossing the midfield. With the Tshwane side, he won two back-to-back DStv Premiership titles after featuring in more than 50 appearances in all competitions.

The midfield maestro then joined Masandawana ahead of 2014/15 season from the now defunct Bloemfontein Celtic. He made his name at the club becoming one of Sundowns’ successful captains.
At Chloorkop, he had a colourful stint winning 12 trophies in seven seasons he spent there. He helped the club to win six DStv Premiership titles, two Telkom Knockout cups, two Nedbank Cup trophies, one CAF Champions League title and one CAF Super Cup.
In Brazilians colours, he found the back of the net 41 times and provided 25 assists in over 300 matches in all competitions.
On announcing his retirement on Tuesday, Kekana further revealed his next career path he’s chosen saying he is happy working at SABC as a analyst. “I know many people will ask what next, I am enjoying my work with the SABC,” he said in a statement.
