Daine Klate remembers Soweto Derby where he scored an own goal

Ex-Orlando Pirates star Daine Klate has shared his worst Soweto Derby experience against Kaizer Chiefs as the two giants of SA football are set to battle it out at the weekend.

Klate was part of the history-making Pirates team that won a double treble in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 DStv Premiership seasons under the guidance of Ruud Krol.

The left-footed winger joined the Buccaneers from SuperSport United in 2010 and spent five seasons with the club, winning a handful of trophies in the process.

Despite being one of the most loved players to ever wear the Pirates Jersey, Klate had his fair share of criticism from the club’s supporters.

Klate took to social media to share his Soweto derby nightmare.

DAINE KLATE’S WORST SOWETO DERBY MEMORY

“Soweto derby dairies. Let’s talk about scoring an own goal in front of 90 000 people,” Klate said in tweet.

The Gqeberha-born star took his former teammate Moeneeb Josephs down memory lane.

‘Slimkat’ as he was famously known remembered the own goal as he was between the stricks on the day.

“I remember it like it was yesterday,” Moeneeb replied to Klate’s tweet.

“But the character you showed to pick yourself up and still go on to achieve big things with the club is a testament to championship mentality. They don’t make them like that anymore.”

Klate scored an own goal in the Soweto derby against Chiefs on the 13th of November 2010 at FNB Stadium. Pirates went on to suffer a 3-1 in that clash.

With the first Soweto derby of 2023 looming large, Chiefs will be looking to bounce back from a 3-2 loss against Golden Arrows in the league last Sunday at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Amakhosi have had an inconsistent start to the 2022/23 campaign under the guidance of head coach Arthur Zwane.

Chiefs have won eight games and drawn four while losing eight in the league after 20 games played. They are currently positioned fifth on the log.

Meanwhile, Bucs, in third place on the log standings with 31 points have won nine games, with four draws and seven defeats.

Pirates have won the last two encounters of the Soweto Derby against Chiefs.

The two Soweto giants will lock horns at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 25th of February.

That match is scheduled to kickoff at 15:30
