Easter Weekend DStv Premiership Fixtures
Easter provides a swag of top DStv Premiership fixtures spread over the long weekend, with plenty to watch live or on a screen.
With just six games to go before the curtain comes down on the DStv Premiership, a lot will be at stake when teams clash.
Here’s your guide to the football weekend:
GOOD FRIDAY
There will be one fixture on Good Friday, with SuperSport United taking on TS Galaxy at their makeshift venue TUT Stadium [19h30].
SuperSport are third behind Orlando Pirates and newly crowned champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
They have amassed 40 points, the same as Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. All three clubs want to finish second to play CAF Champions League football next season.
On the other hand, seventh-placed TS Galaxy must win to finish in the top eight and play MTN8 football next season.
EASTER SATURDAY, 8 APRIL
Richards Bay take on Golden Arrows in a KZN derby clash set for the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium in Durban. [15h00].
At stake is a top-eight place, with the two teams separated by just two points. The PSL rookies Richards Bay are in sixth place with 31 points while Arrows are 10th, just two points adrift.
A win for Arrows would see them leapfrog Richards Bay, while a victory for the Natal Rich Boyz puts them further ahead of Arrows.
In the Eastern Cape, Chippa United will look to complete a double over Orlando Pirates after that 1-0 win in the reverse fixture.
The two sides clash at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium [17h30], and Pirates need to win to maintain second place and eventually play in Africa.
Chippa, on the other hand, are only partially safe as they are just three points away from the basement side Marumo Gallants.
Sekhukhune United face 15th-placed Maritzburg, who are desperately trying to scurry away from the muddy waters of relegation.
The match will be played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium at 17h30. Ninth-placed Babina Noko need to win to storm into the top eight.
KAIZER CHIEFS OUT TO MAINTAIN WINNING STREAK
Kaizer Chiefs will have to be at their best to beat 16th-placed Gallants, who are quarterfinalists in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The Limpopo side desperately needs points when they visit FNB Stadium [20h00] and will need maximum points to move away from the basement.
Chiefs must win to maintain a six-match winning streak and give fans hope ahead of the 2023/24 season.
Arthur Zwane is wary of Gallants and anticipates they will fight bitterly to save their PSL status.
“The guys know the importance of grinding results, especially playing at home. And playing against a team fighting for their lives.
“They are at the bottom of the log, but that doesn’t mean they are not a good team.
“They’re doing well in Confederation Cup – they qualified for the knockout stages. That alone tells you that they are a very good team.
“They’ve just been unfortunate and not grinding results back home. They’re not going to give it to us on a silver platter. We must dig deeper and bring our A-game to get a positive result.”
EASTER SUNDAY, 9 APRIL
On Sunday, 9 April 2023, Royal AM face Stellenbosch FC and the two teams are separated by a point. It means Royal AM, who are on 29 points, need to win to leapfrog Stellies and get into the top half of the table.
The match will be played at the Chatsworth Stadium at 15h00.
Mamelodi Sundowns have already won the title but are not showing signs of slowing down. Downs head coach Rulani Mokwena has reiterated that they will treat every game with equal seriousness.
They meet at Dobsonville Stadium at 15h00. In the last fixture of the long weekend, 12th-placed AmaZulu visit Cape Town City at the DHL Stadium [17h30].
Ayanda Dlamini, elevated to interim coach after Romain Folz’s demotion, would want to prove he can do it.
AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu has made it clear he wants a top-eight finish.
“Frankly, I see AmaZulu as contenders for a top-eight finish. If I am not sure we will qualify for the top eight, I take action, and that’s what I’ve done now,” Zungu told SNAWA.
City are fifth with 34 points and would be looking to finish in the top eight.
