No surprise as Moriri picks his players of the season

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Surprise Moriri has had his say on who he thinks deserves to walk away with this season’s Player of the Season. The PSL season is left with two rounds of matches to go, plus the Nedbank Cup semifinal and Final fixtures.

Sundowns are undoubtedly expected to once again dominate during the end-of-the-season awards. They continue to dominate in domestic football and have extended their record number of league titles to six in a row.

Moriri, who played for Masandawana from 2004 until 2016, stressed that no club deserves to be rewarded more than the Brazilians. The 43-year-old is the current head coach at the club’s DStv Diski Challenge side.

SURPRISE MORIRI BACKS SUNDOWNS FOR TOP ACCOLADES

The players that stood out for me this season are Sundowns players,” he told FARPost.

“It doesn’t matter which player, but the Sundowns players collectively did well. Also, a couple of individuals have done well. I believe in teamwork, so it will be very difficult for me to single out one player because I think collectively, they all did well to put Sundowns where it is.

“If I have to choose, I will say the goalkeeper, the right back, two centre backs, the left back, midfielders and the strikers, honestly the team has done very well, so honestly, it’s difficult to choose one name.”

OTHER TEAMS THAT IMPRESSED THIS SEASON

But besides Sundowns’ dominant performance, Moriri had also picked up opposition teams that stood out this season.

“One can say it is surprising that Richards Bay is fighting for relegation because they really started well. Stellenbosch are always doing well with youngsters, I think they are rebuilding, but they have done well.

“But I must say SuperSport have really done well. Gavin Hunt came in with the new team, but still he is fighting for a second spot. We must give him his flowers. Unfortunately, he is competing against Mamelodi Sundowns, who are in form. But I think he did well.”
