Pirates beat TS Galaxy to keep CAF CL hopes alive

Orlando Pirates beat TS Galaxy 2-1 in a DStv Premiership clash to keep their CAF Champions League qualification hopes alive.

The game took place at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Buccaneers were doing a fantastic job of frustrating the hosts in the opening stage of the first period.

With Pirates taking command of the showpiece, they broke the deadlock just two minutes into the game through Terrence Dzvukamanja.

But, the Rockets were not discouraged after the early goal, as they did not sit back and watch Jose Riveiro’s side taking charge of the contest.

As the first half progressed, the complexion of the game took a different direction, with both sides testing each other’s goals.

The hosts managed to find an equaliser in the 39th minute, courtesy of captain Given Msimango.

The match calmed down a bit as the half drew on, although Galaxy were starting to settle into the rhythm of the showpiece.

GALAXY, PIRATES LEVEL AT BREAK

The half-time break whistle blew, with the scoreline still 1-1 from the two teams.

In the second stanza, Pirates came out guns blazing, looking to add to the scoreline.

The intensity of the game in the second half allowed the fans to enjoy a brilliant day of the mouthwatering contest from the stands.

In the 59th minute of the match, Dion Hotto scored the second goal for the Soweto giants to keep their CAF Champions League qualification hopes alive.

After Pirates’ second goal, the Mpumalanga-based outfit struggled to threaten the visitors’ side goalkeeper.

But the Sea Robbers had a couple of chances to bury the game. But failed to capitalise on their clear-cut opportunities.

Whereas Galaxy’s technical team threw on all the weapons, they had on the bench. They desperately chased the game with the hope of bouncing back stronger.

Pirates’ game plan worked in their favour as they managed to hold on to their lead.

ORLANDO PIRATES SECURE THREE POINTS

In the end, it was the Pirates who claimed all the valuable three points away from home.

As things stand, Pirates are placed second on the table with 49 points, just two points ahead of third-placed SuperSport United.
