Rulani Mokwena’s top candidates for Footballer of the Season

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has given an indication of his top candidates for the Footballer of the Season award.

And it’s no surprise that the Downs mentor has named no less than five of his players as potential candidates for the top award.

Mokwena insists the likes of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, midfielders Themba Zwane and Teboho Mokoena as well as forwards Peter Shalulile and Cassius Mailula are all in the conversation.

These players, according to Mokwena, have all shown the consistency that is needed to walk away with the award at the end of the season.

“Of, course we’d speak about the Footballer of the Season but to be Footballer of the Season you must maintain a level of consistency and this is what in my opinion not only Ronwen has shown but a lot of the players have shown,” said Mokwena, reacting to Williams’ Player of the Month award.

The goalkeeper was named Player of the month for January and February with Mokwena winning the Coach’s accolade.

“Themba Zwane has shown this level of consistency (required to win Footballer of the Season), Teboho Mokoena has shown this level of consistency, Peter Shalulile, Cassius Mailula, so many players,” added Mokwena.

SUNDOWNS ON THE VERGE OF SIXTH SUCCESSIVE TITLE

Sundowns are expected to clean up at the end of season awards after what promises to be yet another season of dominance.

They are only four points away from winning their sixth straight DStv Premiership title and also one of the favourites to clinch the Nedbank Cup.

The rampant Brazilians are also showing the sort of form that makes them a team to watch in the Caf Champions League, a trophy they are desperate to win.

It is safe to assume a number of Downs players will be in contention for various individual awards at the end of the season.
