Stellenbosch snap up SA youth international
DStv Premiership side Stellenbosch FC have snapped up SA youth international goalkeeper to the Cape club set-up.
Stellies made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon, 29 March 2023.
Steve Barker’s side completed the signing of 18-year-old goal-minder Dejean Ah Shene.
The goalie was on the books of Ubuntu Cape Town under the tutelage of current Stellies goalkeeper coach, Pernell McKop.
The rising shot-stopper has represented South Africa at the U17 and U20 levels.
Stellenbosch confirmed that the youngster will team up with the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] side, but he is eligible to play for the first team at any time.
The Ocean View-born Cape Town is expected to value to the Winelands-based outfit’s goalkeeping department after signing a long-term deal with Stellies.
DEJEAN AH SHENE’S FIRST WORDS AS STELLENBOSCH PLAYER
“The way that the Stellenbosch first team gives players opportunities in the PSL was really a motivating factor,” said Ah Shene on signing his contract.
“It left me to think that I could also be there one day because I know I have the potential to fulfill that dream.
“Seeing the style of play that Stellenbosch plays compared to other PSL teams also encouraged me to join the team.
“The team likes moving the ball around and that’s the way I like to play because I like building up from the back.”
Ah Shene also expressed his delight to be reunited with his ex-coach, McKop.
DEJEAN AH SHENE REUNITES WITH PERNELL MCKOP
“Before I joined, Coach P would always message me, check up on me, and give me advice. He always wanted me here and that also boosted me,” he added.
“I know I can grow and develop my game even further under him because he’s a good coach. With that kind of support, I can only become a better player.
“When a coach supports you, it motivates you even further and you don’t want to disappoint them, so I just want to give 100% for them and for the club all of the time.”
