Sundowns held to stalemate at home by 10-man CT City
DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 0-0 stalemate by 10-man Cape Town City at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday evening.
Mamelodi Sundowns came into the encounter already declared champions without playing a match this past weekend.
But that did not stop Sundowns from dominating the match and creating numerous scoring opportunities.
The Tshwane giants were also denied two goal-scoring opportunities when Cassius Mailula was wrongfully judged to be offside.
A few minutes later Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was forced to make a great save through an effort from Darwin Gonzalez.
CT City also failed to take advantage of the resulting corner kick with the header from defender Mark Van Heereden going over the bar.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS DOMINATE
Downs saw their appeal for a penalty kick denied in the 39th minute. This is after an effort by Mailula looked like it had hit the hand of Van Heereden but that wasn’t the case.
The Brazilians came close again when Teboho Mokoena’s header from a corner kick landed safely in the hands of Darren Keet. The two teams went into the half time break at 0-0.
The hosts continued where they left off in the second stanza. They quickly created an opportunity outside of the 18-area but a shot from Aubrey Modibna went over the bar. City forward Khanyisa Mayo came close but a solo run found a well organised Downs defence who quickly dismantled the attack.
On-form forward Mailula came close in the 59th minute after his curler missed the target by a few inches.
Cameroonian midfielder Fidele Ambina was given his marching orders 11 minutes after coming on. He received two yellow cards for two separate fouls.
Surprisingly CT City looked promising a few moments later but failed to make anything out of it.
Peter Shalulile came close with five minutes remaining but his effort went wide.
It was the third draw for Sundowns who have now opened the gap by 20 points.
