‘It happened to Liverpool FC’: Matthew Rusike on Chiefs’ situation

Retired striker Matthew Rusike believes there is nothing peculiar about Kaizer Chiefs’ situation, likening it to what Liverpool FC endured.

Liverpool FC went for a staggering 30 years without winning the Premier League title, only to break the jinx during the 2019/20 season under coach Jürgen Klopp.

And the former striker, Rusike opines that Kaizer Chiefs’ situation is similar to what The Reds underwent. Chiefs have now gone for almost a decade without winning the coveted DStv Premiership title.

Even the raft changes in the technical team have not produced the desired results. On Thursday, The Glamour Boys suffered a humiliating 5-1 loss at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns, who in turn sealed their seventh title in a row.

This one was undoubtedly a bitter pill to swallow for Cavin Johnson and his men. Moreso, as the season reaches its tail end, the Chiefs management is sure to make more changes.

Several players are already being linked out of the Naturena. In addition, the Soweto giants are primed to appoint a new coach for the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.

“They are trying to gradually build a foundation from something. If you are a player at a big team like this and you don’t perform, then you know your job is at risk,” ex-Chiefs striker Rusike told FARPost.

“I think by the end of the season, we will see a re-build. There has just been a shift in culture. You see it with a lot of big teams.

“It happened to Liverpool and they came back, now it’s Manchester United. It will take them a while before they come back.

“Teams like Kaizer Chiefs will always be there and If it takes a few years to be back on the right track, then that is what it’s going to take. It’s difficult to make a success story out of such a big team with big pressure.”
