What the latest Mathoho update means for his Chiefs’ future

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has provided the latest on defender Eric Mathoho.

And from what coach Zwane said, things aren’t looking good for the highly experienced defender.

The 31-year-old footballer has been on the sidelines for quite some time this season due to injury concerns.

Now, one may ask what Mathoho’s update means for his Chiefs’ future, with his contract set to expire at the end of this campaign.

The veteran defender has featured once for Amakhosi this season when they defeated SuperSport United 2-1 in a DStv Premiership clash in September 2022. In fact, he only played for one minute in that game.

His mentor, Zwane, has provided the latest on the former Bafana Bafana international when was asked if there’s any chance of Mathoho returning to the club anytime soon.

ARTHUR ZWANE PROVIDES ERIC MATHOHO UPDATE

“I don’t want to lie. He’s been out for some time now and we don’t know in terms of the recovery,” Zwane told the media after their 2-1 win over Casric Stars in the Nedbank Cup last 16 at FNB Stadium over the weekend.

“As things stand, he hasn’t started jogging. And that alone tells you that is not going to happen anytime soon [For Mathoho to return].

“But, should he recover sooner rather than later we will be very happy to have him back because of his experience and also knowing very well what he can do for us.”

At this point, it remains unclear if the Soweto giants will extend the stay of Mathoho at the club when the season comes to an end.

Chiefs will shift their focus to the DStv Premiership encounter against Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday, 18 March 2023.

The game will start at 20:00.
