Is Edmilson Dove staying or going at Kaizer Chiefs?

Mozambican defender Edmilson Dove is one of eight players whose contract with Kaizer Chiefs expires at the end of the season, and his future has been decided.

Along with Dove, key players like Itumeleng Khune, Keagan Dolly, Sifiso Hlanti, Njabulo Ngcobo, Siyethemba Sithebe, Jasond Gonzalez and George Matlou are also facing uncertainty about their future at Naturena.

Currently, Chiefs’ priority appears to be finalising the new coaching structure ahead of addressing expiring player contracts. Current interim coach Cavin Johnson will be replaced by a new head coach at the end of the season.

Dove, the ex-Cape Town City FC star and Mambas vice-captain is undoubtedly anxious about his fate with Amakhosi. Since joining Chiefs in 2022, he has become a regular for the team under former coach Arthur Zwane. Dove’s versatility in both left-back and central defence positions has been crucial.

The 29-year-old has partnered with Given Msimango at centre-back in the absence of the injured Thatayaone Ditlhokwe. He has had a somewhat solid season with 17 appearances, and his contract does include a two-year renewal option, but a final decision is yet to be made.

WILL EDMILSON DOVE BE AT KAIZER CHIEFS OR NOT NEXT SEASON?

Sources close to the situation have revealed that Amakhosi are considering triggering the two-year option on the defender’s contract, securing his place in the team.

His recent performances as a left centre-back, filling in for the absent Ditlhokwe, have proven his worth to the club.

“He has shown the right attitude, whether playing at left-back or in central defence. Unless something drastic happens, he’s likely to stay at the club for another two seasons,” a source told FARPost.

Dove’s adaptability in defensive roles has proven to be a significant asset for Amakhosi. Retaining the Mozambican reinforces the team’s defensive depth and tactical flexibility.
