‘I never really spoke to coach Rulani’: Margeman recalls Sundowns exit

Bafana Bafana midfielder Grant Margeman has recalled what transpired when he returned to Mamelodi Sundowns from a loan spell with SuperSport United last year.

Margeman joined SuperSport on a permanent move ahead of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season from Sundowns. This was after the talented midfielder spent a season-long loan with Matsatsantsa during the 2022/23 campaign.

The 25-year-old signed for the Brazilians from Ajax Cape Town [now known as Cape Town Spurs] in 2020. Margeman endured a frustrating spell at Sundowns after making only three appearances, and he was sent on loan to Moroka Swallows the following season.

After a successful loan stint with SuperSport last season, Margeman returned to his parent club looking to get a playing opportunity under Rulani Mokwena.

The utility player has revealed that he never got to train with the Sundowns first team after his return from rivals SuperSport.

“I never really spoke to coach Rulani when I came back from loan,” Margeman told FARPost when asked about his last days at Sundowns.

“When I came back, I didn’t even train with the first team at Sundowns; I was training with the other guys who were coming from loans. And you know, as a player, you don’t want to be going on loan every season. You want some sort of stability. That’s why I was happy to join SuperSport on a permanent contract.”

In the current campaign, the Cape Town-born central midfielder has made 28 appearances for the Spartans, scoring one goal and providing three assists.

Margeman has formed a formidable combination in the middle of the park with former Orlando Pirates star Siphesihle Ndlovu.

Meanwhile, Margeman has been rewarded for his good performances with a national team call-up by Hugo Broos. He featured in two FIFA series international friendlies for Bafana Bafana against Andorra and Algeria.
